Mr Randeniya practices in the firm's dispute resolution group. He advises and represents clients in arbitration, and has represented clients in DIAC, ADCCAC, ICC, and ad hoc arbitrations. Mr Randeniya practices in the firm's dispute resolution group. He advises and represents clients in arbitration, and has represented clients in DIAC, ADCCAC, ICC, and ad hoc arbitrations. Mr Randeniya regularly acts for clients in high value construction disputes. He also advises on maritime and shipping disputes, banking disputes, employment disputes, as well as disputes relating to commercial transactions. Some of his recent matters include acting for a major UAE bank in a commercial claim in excess of AED250 million, acting for employers in several construction disputes each involving claims in excess of AED100 million, and successfully representing a client in a claim of approximately USD5 million involving international air cargo freight.

Prior to joining Afridi & Angell in 2008, Mr Randeniya was in the private bar of Sri Lanka practicing in the Law Chambers of Dr Harsha Cabral, President’s Counsel.  He was also a visiting lecturer in law at the Faculties of Law and Management at the University of Colombo. Mr Randeniya is a recommended practitioner in dispute resolution in Legal 500 EMEA.

Mr Samad joined Afridi & Angell in 2012. He specialises in M&A and transactional work, as well as general corporate/commercial matters. He has extensive knowledge and experience in cross-border transactional and corporate advisory matters, including complex acquisitions and divestures, for a broad range of public and private clients.

Some of his notable transactions include:

  • Advising the Kering Group on a review of their privacy policy for compliance with UAE law. The matter involved over 50 jurisdictions and Afridi & Angell acted as UAE counsel.
  • Advising SAP Ariba on compliance obligations in the UAE including requirements to comply with UAE data protection and privacy laws. This was also a global matter where Afridi & Angell acted as UAE counsel. 
  • Advising Yoox Net-a-Porter in preparing a privacy policy for their UAE operations. 
  • Advising the seller in the sale of three related schools in the Emirate of Sharjah for US$100 million. The seller will continue to own the property on which the schools are built and will lease the property to the purchaser as part of the completion requirements. 
  • Advising the vendors on the sale of an eighty percent stake in a Dubai-based school to a GCC private equity firm for AED 200 million. 
  • Advising the vendor on the sale of its interest in a UAE based manufacturer of aerosols and sealants. 
  • Advising a group of investors on their investment in a Dubai based food and beverage business. Advising a client on the structuring and set-up of its joint venture operations in the DIFC. 
  • Advising an international real estate brokerage on the set-up of its UAE franchise. 
  • Advising multiple banking clients on the implementation of the UAE Direct Debit System.

Mr Shaikh has over 14 years’ experience in the Dubai real estate market in both private practice and high profile in-house roles. Mr Shaikh has advised on some of the largest real estate developments in the region, including the Palm Jumeirah, The World, Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum City and Jumeirah Lake Towers.

Such varied exposure has enabled Mr Shaikh to offer unique practical advice to his clients by combining extensive legal knowledge with sound commercial judgment developed within a corporate environment during his years as in-house counsel.

Additionally, Mr Shaikh’s knowledge of both real estate and construction matters make him uniquely placed to provide advice on all aspects of real estate development in Dubai from the design and conception stage, to sales and marketing, through construction and development up to operation and handover. In a market where lawyers are traditionally compartmentalised into narrow sectors, his well-rounded level of experience is unprecedented among real estate development lawyers in the UAE.

Mr Shaikh has started up the Pakistan real estate desk with a view to applying his expertise in real estate law and regulation to the rapidly expanding Pakistan market, where he has previously worked on large-scale infrastructure projects. Mr Shaikh increasingly divides his time between the Dubai office and Pakistan.

His notable transactions and litigation experience include:

  • Advising and developing establishment of community management scheme, legal documentation and title structure for prominent and exclusive villa community comprising 1500 villas and mansions (ranging from between AED 15 million to AED 90 million) and the world’s longest man-made lagoon, situated in Dubai. 
  • Drafted and negotiated AED 1.6 billion (USD450 million) sale and/or plot development agreements for 19 Islands in Dubai. 
  • Oversaw construction and infrastructure development of a Master Community comprising over 80 Towers and housing 200,000 residents located in Dubai which included drafting community and building management documentation.
  • Acted for major UAE developer in AED 1.1 billion sale and acquisition of a hotel in the DIFC, as well as advising on the strata management and title structure of the remainder of the mixed use development. 
  • Advised the on its USD1.2 billion IPO of global depositary receipts on the main market of the London Stock Exchange. 
  • Prepared real estate and construction element of due diligence and prospectus related to Damac Group’s USD1.2 billion IPO of global depositary receipts on the London Stock Exchange and Damac Group’s IPO on the Dubai Financial Market. 
  • Prepared, drafted plot development agreements and otherwise advised prominent master developer in relation to the sale and development of hotel plots on Palm Jumeirah. 
  • Drafted building and unit sales agreements and plot development agreements for prominent Master Developer for large-scale master community in Dubai comprising over 500 buildings and plots in Dubai.

Ms White has wealth of knowledge in commercial and retail leasing, including drafting ground leases, long term sub-leases, car parking licenses, disclosure statements, and default notices. She has represented both landlords and tenants.
