Recent Pro Bono Client Matters and other CSR Activities

Providing restructuring support to an established school in Dubai where Afridi & Angell advised on the transfer of ownership and management of the school. Afridi & Angell advised on placing a new set of owners and a management team, and appointed a new board of directors. This transfer of ownership will bring the school back into the community where it will be adequately supported to maintain a high level of academic standard as well as maintain the minimum standard of operational requirements set by the UAE government.

Afridi & Angell was also involved in a medical negligence matter where a team of our partners and associates represented the parents of a baby born pre-maturely against a leading hospital in Dubai. Afridi & Angell advised the client before the Dubai Health Care Authority, which found that all the medical personnel involved were negligent and held entirely in favour of our client, which is a rare occurrence. The case is currently in litigation.

Advocates for International Development (A4ID)

.

A4ID’s vision is the law and lawyers playing their full part in the eradication of global poverty.

Unequal access to legal expertise acts as a barrier to economic growth and equality of opportunity. A4ID harnesses the skills and expertise of the legal profession to combat poverty and drive progress towards the UN Millennium Development Goals.

A4ID achieves this by partnering with leading law firms, barristers’ chambers, in-house lawyers and academics who are keen to offer their skills free of charge to support development organisations and developing country governments in need of legal support.

A4ID works with an extensive network of legal partners – more than 39,000 legal experts from every part of the world – whose pro bono work has so far benefited communities and organisations in 114 countries.

Afridi & Angell provided research assistance to A4ID with the World Bank Initiative on compiling the global research project, ‘Doing Business’ 2015. Afridi & Angell contributed the UAE content to this report on various topics including starting a business; employing workers; registering property; getting credit; protecting investors, enforcing contracts; and resolving insolvency. The results of the research were presented in the annual Doing Business report, which is currently the best-selling World Bank publication.

We also advised Oxfam Great Britain in respect of charity fundraising laws in Dubai in advance of its large fundraising event at the Dubai International Film Festival 2011.
